Exhibition Concept

Inspired by the way Hong Kong people displaying their family pictures in the 60’s, photos shown in this exhibition are presented in large picture frames. Photos that capture memorable moments in color or black-&-white, often faded and with smudge, are arranged inside a large picture frame.

The "family picture frame " concept perceives "Queen's Pier" as "family member". The humble but rigid picture frame symbolizes the strength of the active conservationists, whereas, the enclosed photos represent their concerns of conservation issues. Seeing these “family picture frames” hanged on the walls of a cafe with decades of history, one’s nostalgic emotion would grow much richer than the famous Hong Kong-style milk tea.

The participating photographers express in their own ways the emotions about Queen’s Pier within the confined  “family picture frame”.

The Queen on Grandma’s Desk

A lace crochet knitted by Grandma have been placed under the glass countertop of her good old cupboard, nice and neat for the past fifty years.  Also under the same piece of glass are her most valuable family photos.

Queen’s Pier is like a family member to people in Hong Kong, and she left us for one year already.  Not because we are nostalgic, but from the loss of our dearest Queen’s Pier, we need to remember the lesson that we sadly learned.

We hope that our future generations will have the chance to treasure their old furniture, old photo frame, old piers and buildings, but not just leaving them with a bunch of faded pictures for remembrance.

The Final Visitors

Last summer, many people came to Queen's Pier, to do something for her, for others, or for their own. I have shown them in vague images, not deliberately conceal the identity of them, but do not want to be confined to certain persons. If you find some of these images familiar, you may feel pleased, because you did something there last year.

The Queen in my heart

Last year, the Queen's Pier was brutally disintegrated and removed.  The site of today's Pier is an ugly stack of sand.  Although the lineup is tidy, it seems incompatible with the appearance. Photos arouse memories.  Stacks of pictures arouse forgotten memories.  Hopefully after removing the dust-laden old photos, clear sky will be seen…
